Purpose Of Varistor

The purpose of a varistor is to protect electronic circuits and components from voltage surges and spikes. Varistors are commonly used in devices such as power supplies, motor drive circuits, and telecommunications equipment to prevent damage caused by these electrical disturbances. A varistor is a type of voltage-dependent resistor that has a non-linear current-voltage characteristic. It acts as a voltage-controlled switch, remaining in a high-resistance state under normal operating conditions. However, when a voltage surge or spike occurs, the varistor quickly switches to a low-resistance state, effectively diverting the excess current away from the sensitive components. The main advantage of using a varistor is its ability to respond quickly to sudden voltage transients. This helps protect the equipment by absorbing the excess energy and preventing it from causing damage. Varistors are designed to have a high energy rating and can handle numerous voltage surges without degrading their performance. In summary, varistors play a crucial role in protecting electronic circuits and components from voltage surges and spikes. They provide a cost-effective and reliable solution for ensuring the longevity and functionality of a wide range of electronic devices.
