Metal Oxide Varistor Definition

Metal Oxide Varistors (MOVs) are electronic components widely used for surge protection in a variety of electrical and electronic devices. These components are designed to protect sensitive equipment from high voltage transient surges and spikes, which can damage or destroy the devices. The Metal Oxide Varistor is made of zinc oxide grains and other metal oxide additives, which are compressed into a ceramic disk. These disks are then connected to electrodes and encapsulated in a protective casing. MOVs work by having a high resistance at normal operating voltage levels, but a significantly lower resistance when exposed to high transient voltages. When a surge occurs, the MOVs quickly divert the excess energy and limit the voltage to a safe level, protecting the connected devices from damage. With their fast response time, high energy absorption capabilities, and low cost, Metal Oxide Varistors have become an essential component in many electrical and electronic systems including power supplies, electronic appliances, telecommunication infrastructure, and automotive applications.
